Join the Fun at "Keeping Your New Year's Resolution Day" at SHARE!

Every year, people decide they'd like to lose weight, get organized, save more money, improve relationships or other New Year's Resolutions. And every year, people slide away from their goals, unable to stick with their decision, or perhaps lacking the tools to accomplish their ambitions.

Research shows that people are MUCH more likely to stick to their goals when they pursue them as a part of a support group.

With that in mind, SHARE! will be hosting two "Keep Your New Year's Resolution Days" at SHARE! Culver City and SHARE! Downtown. You are invited to attend, check out more than 25 support groups and choose the one that's best for you! It's fun, free and could be life-changing-- so what do you have to lose?

Self-help support groups work for several reasons, according to research:
  1. Stating a goal publicly, and being surrounded by encouraging people, rather than dealing with it on their own, makes people more likely to reach their goals.

  2. Support groups give people the encouragement they need to keep trying even when they mess up or make mistakes in pursuit of their goal, rather than giving up because they binged on chocolate or missed a day at the gym or smoked a cigarette.

  3. Support groups teach tools and systematic approaches for achieving change. Debtors Anonymous, for example, teaches people to keep a budget, and to systematically whittle away at their debt. Overeaters Anonymous encourages people to set their own abstinence, working with a doctor if they choose to find the approach to eating which is best for them. Clutterers Anonymous teaches people to remove an item each time they bring home a new item.
"Keep Your New Year's Resolution Day" offers an opportunity to get to know all kinds of self-help support groups which are free and available throughout Los Angeles County. These groups address relationship issues, eating disorders, compulsive behaviors, advanced planning for health crises, anxiety, depression, substance abuse (including smoking), and attention deficit disorders. While many of the groups follow 12-Step formats, others use cognitive behavioral methods, and/or non-spiritual approaches.

There will be information about the 12,000 self-help support groups in Los Angeles County and help finding the ones will help you keep your New Year's Resolutions.

Participants will be able to attend sample meetings of the groups and get information and literature. These groups include Overeaters Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous/Compulsive Spending, Co-Dependents Anonymous, Crystal Meth Anonymous, Sexual Compulsives Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, Recovering Couples Anonymous, Free 'N' One, S.M.A.R.T. Recovery, Narcotics Anonymous, Women in Sobriety, Alcoholics Anonymous, Cleptomaniacs and Shoplifters Anonymous (CASA), Nicotine Anonymous, Attention Deficit Disorder support group, and Recovery International. Several groups will be offered in Spanish including Co-Dependientes Anonimos, Neuroticos Anonimos, and W.R.A.P (Wellness Recovery Action Plan).

If you have ever wondered what happens in a support group, or want a free way to reach for the life you have dreamed of, attend Keep Your New Year's Resolution Day. Free lunch is provided, including vegetarian options.

SHARE!’s Mission
The mission of SHARE! the Self-Help And Recovery Exchange is to help people in Los Angeles pursue personal growth and change. SHARE! empowers people to change their own lives and provides them a loving, safe, non-judgmental place where they can find community, information and support. SHARE! provides many services including:
  • SHARE! Collaborative Housing a public-private partnership providing affordable, permanent supportive housing to disabled people in single-family houses throughout Los Angeles County. People with similar issues, such as vets, mental health consumers, people with diabetes, trauma issues, etc. live like college roommates, each paying $500 or less for their place in the house which is furnished down to knives, forks and spoons. The home owner furnishes the house, pays for all the utilities, does not collect a Security Deposit, nor a last month’s rent and does not perform a credit or background check. The home owners join an owners’ association that regularly inspects the houses to ensure quality, and helps the owner with any issues or problems that arise. Residents attend weekly self-help support groups, help with neighborhood projects, provide support for other residents and share a room with one roommate of their choice. Residents pay rent from their disability checks or other income directly to the owner. Many owners will take pets.

  • SHARE! Self-Help Clearinghouse for Los Angeles County - Countywide referrals to 12,000 self-help meetings representing 750 different life-issues. Our information is updated often as self-help groups tend to move around and come and go. We give meetings technical assistance including best practices. We help with meeting formation, content, format, publicity, problems, etc. We also have leads on meeting space throughout the County. Call SHARE! (310) 846-5270 or toll-free 1-877-SHARE-49.

  • SHARE! Self-Help Centers - SHARE! Culver City and SHARE! Downtown LA are centers where a large community of self-help groups meet each week, addressing all kinds issues, e.g. anger management, health, depression, self-esteem, relationships, childhood abuse, substance abuse, reaching goals, etc. Together we host more than 130 weekly meetings with monthly attendance of 5,000 people. SHARE! accepts brochures and flyers for distribution at our centers, so agencies and others can reach the self-help community. We have lots of volunteer opportunities for people including those doing court-ordered community service. We accept all volunteers even those with limited skills or felony convictions.

  • SHARE! Rapid Recovery helps each person design and access recovery tools for whatever issues they would like to work on. SHARE! Rapid Recovery uses SAMHSA’s Eight Dimensions of Wellness with a checklist of recovery goals. People use the checklists to identify things they want to work on. SHARE! then links them to the self-help support groups and other tools to help each person realize their personal recovery goals.

  • SHARE! Recovery Retreat in Monterey Park provides a home away from home for up to two weeks filled with intensive recovery activities, including self-help support groups, independent living skills, conflict resolution and paths to achieving goals. People learn in a homey environment, living together as a family with every participant being part of the shared leadership of the house

  • SHARE! Volunteer-to-Job - gives anyone a meaningful job at SHARE!—no matter how limited their skills or debilitating their symptoms. SHARE! trains and encourages our Volunteer-to-Jobs participants until they develop the skills and confidence to obtain competitive jobs either at SHARE! or in the community.

SHARE! is supported by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and private donations. SHARE! is currently seeking new directors to sit on its Board of Directors.
